Using Your Own Domain Name

Print these pages and click here to go back.

Domain names are handled by networksolutions (formerly InterNIC) independent of us. The information is only relevant if you want to point your domain name (whether you have one already or not) directly to the site we build for you. Topics covered here:

Already Have Your Own Domain Name
Don't Have a Domain Name Yet
Modifying Your Domain Name
Finishing Touches (Post-Request Process)

Already Have Your Own Domain Name?

If you already have your own domain name and do NOT have an existing web site, we can point your domain name to the site we build for you for $5 a month. In order to do this, you will need to modify your InterNIC record that contains the information about your domain name. See below for instructions on how to modify your domain name.

If you already have your own domain name and DO have an existing web site, all you need from us is the URL information to link from your existing site to the site we create for you. We will give you this URL when you pay for your site. Then, whoever handles your web site can create a link anywhere you desire on your existing web site that connects DIRECTLY to the site we build for you.

Many of our clients have decided that our standard templates look better (and are easier to update) than their existing sites and choose to exclusively use the site we build for them. This is very easy to do. You can simply
modify your InterNIC record (see below); then we can point your domain name to the site we build for you for $5 per month. Once you are satisfied with your new setup, you can discontinue your old web site service and save some money!

Don't Have Your Own Domain Name Yet?
If you do not have a domain name and would like to purchase one, you can do so at networksolutions.com. We recommend that you have us register your domain name for you (click here).

If you would prefer to do it yourself, you will require a few pieces of technical information.

1)

Technical Contact:
Fill in JSK184 for the Technical Contact NIC-Handle. (This will identify us so you do not have to type it all in.) If you are modifying your domain name from someone other than Networksolutions, you will be required to enter our full information:

Modifying Your InterNIC Record (Domain Name)

If you would like us to point your domain name to the site we build for you (and/or point emails@your-domain-name.com to your real email account) you need to modify your InterNIC record. In order to do this, you must submit a modification form from the InterNIC (networksolutions) web site. If you would like us to do this for you (which we recommend), please email us.

The information you will need during the modification is the above Technical Contact information and the Name Servers.

Finishing Touches (The Post-Request Process)

Email Confirmation:
Once you have successfully submitted the modification request, NetworkSolutions will send several emails to you. Below is their process and what you need to do in each step.

NOTE TO AOL USERS: AOL software (depending on the version) prevents you from simply replying to an email message. In order to do so properly (according to them), you must follow these steps any time you have to reply to their emails:

a) Highlight the entire message
b) Click on the Reply button

1) Confirmation of Submission
This is the first email you will receive from Networksolutions. It's only purpose is to let you know they have received the request. You don't have anything to do yet.

2) Confirmation of Modification
This is second email you get. It contains instructions at the top of the email on how to proceed. Below that are several lines that contain the actual information of your domain name record (which we call MODIFICATION CONTENT). It usually begins with 0a. and goes through 3c. or higher. You MUST reply to this email, making SURE to include their MODIFICATION CONTENT in your response. Normally, the process is to click a REPLY button in your email program when viewing their email. An email window opens allowing you to add your own content. If you can scroll down and see their MODIFICATION CONTENT, you are fine and should send the message. If you do not see their content, you must return to their original email and COPY their entire email and PASTE it into the content area of your reply. If you do not have their MODIFICATION CONTENT in your response, they will not make the change. There is no need to type anything else in this response email.

3) Authorization
Unfortunately, networksolutions has added another step to this process to verify that you are you. At the moment, it is unclear if this email is sent in all cases. If you do receive this Authorization Email from them, you will have to REPLY to their email, again making SURE to include their AUTHORIZATION CONTENT in your response. However, they force you to do two more things before you send that email. You must scroll down and add text to lines 0a. and 1a. Specifically, you need to add
Mail-From to 0a. and Y to 1a. They should read as follows:
0a. Auth Scheme.............: Mail-From
1a. (Y)ES (N)O......: Y

Once they receive your emails, InterNIC will compare your current email address to the one they have on file. By "current email address," they mean the email address you have specified in your EMAIL and REPLY TO address fields (in your email program). If you do not know how to check these fields, click here and search for keyword REPLY. Our FAQ #29 includes information on this.

If it matches, the change will be made in 1-2 days. If the email does NOT match the one they have on file, you will receive an ERROR email from them with a tracking# in the subject of the email.

In this situation, the only way you can authorize the changes will be via fax or calling them direct. InterNIC has very specific requirements for the fax request:

1) print out the ERROR email and attach a cover letter
2) cover letter must be on your company letterhead
3) cover letter must include the tracking#
4) cover letter must include a date
5) cover letter must include "I authorize you to make these changes."
6) cover letter must include your domain name
7) cover letter must be signed by a VP or higher
8) cover letter must have title of the person signing
9) fax to (703) 742-9552 or (703) 464-7055

Pointing:
Once the entire registration process is complete, we will then have the authority to point your domain name to the site we build for you (this is done on our server). This is not automatic. You can monitor InterNIC's progress by going to networksolutions.com, clicking WHOIS Search and entering your domain name. When your record comes up, you can verify if the information is correct. When it is, you will then need to notify us, so we can set you up on our server. Please allow 1-2 days for the pointing to take effect.
